Good evening Missouri,
The days are starting to melt together, the time change is working its self out, we are accustomed to eating food from a truck, and living with Geckos has turned out okay. I think we are getting the hang of this Hawaii thing. We have also started saying, Aloha – hello, thank you, hey and Mahola – mostly thank you, but also just a nice thing to end with. We have not got the “shaka” down. Make a fist, now only raise your thumb and pinky…that’s the shaka. People use it as a wave hello or a thank you. People have done it toward us, but we keep forgetting and wave LOL.
We had Acai bowls for breakfast today. For those who know Trevor this is a big deal. It was full of fruit, granola, blended fruit, honey and so much goodness. Mine had Guava and Dark Chocolate in the mix. Then we drove to the Aloha Stadium for the Saturday flea market. It was HUGE and it was hot. We found a couple things and had coconut curry chicken from a vendor.
Then we drove to Diamond Head to go to the lookout. Did I mention it was hot today? We parked, saw all the steps on the mountain side and totally wimped out. We happily pulled our “we’re too old for this card” and drove away. However, the drive along the southeast coastline did not disappoint. So many beaches and waves and cliffs. And, this side of the island is windy. We stopped at Koko Crater, Ma’kapu Head, and the Halona Blow Hole. Sandy Beach was full of surfers, too.
We ended the day back up on the North Shore. We are thankful we chose to stay on this side of the island. Haleiwa and Waialua have been the perfect hub for this leg of our trip. Small, local businesses with nice people. We even met someone tonight whose brother lives near St. Louis and she’d been in Missouri to see him recently.
One thing we noticed this week were these stickers on people’s cars that said “HE>i”. We finally Googled it to learn that it was a shop near where we were staying. We went there after dinner and found out that a teen from Haleiwa made a screen saver for his cell phone with “HE>i” on it. When people asked he said it reminded him of John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Friends and family asked for stickers and t-shirts, and it grew into a full time business from there. They have an online store as well, HEgreaterthani.com.
Trevor has had time to play on his radio, I’ve nearly finished reading a book. We are packing up tonight to fly to the big island tomorrow. We hear it’s not as face-paced. Looking forward to more adventures!
Your friend, B
