Sunrise, Sunset

On Thursday we got up early and drove to Laie Point to see the sunrise. The walk was short, the rocks were jagged, the view was wonderful. We love watching the sunrise. (In Maine we got up at 3 a.m. just to drive to the eastern-most point in the US and watch the sunrise.) At Laei Point there is an arch created by years of waves and erosion. High tide was falling as the waves crashed. It was beautiful. Photos don’t do it justice. That evening, we watched the sunset at Haleiwa. The evening breeze was welcomed – 85 here feels warmer than 85 at home. It was time to put our feet up after a long day of exploring.

In between the sunrise and sunset, we went back to Pearl Harbor for our USS Arizona tour. (Timed tickets are required.) We watched a short film about the attack, a National Park Service ranger told us stories, then we boarded the boat to go out to the wreckage. There another ranger told us the story of Joe George, a boxer in the military who was labeled a trouble maker but on that day saved lives. These rangers are serious about preserving the stories; and, visitors remaining quiet and showing respect for those entombed in the wreckage.

After the USS Arizona, we drove to the Dole Plantation for the must-have Dole Whip. We had ours dipped in chocolate, it was good! We took the short train ride around the plantation. Missouri may have acres and acres of corn, but Oahu has acres and acres of pineapples. And, it really does taste better here. Don’t worry we are going to send some home before we fly back 😊 The flowers in the plantation garden were vibrant and unique. But one thing I’ve noticed is, for all their beauty, they don’t have much fragrance (except the hibiscus). We’ll see how the other two islands compare.

One last thing, I’m still giggling at all the wild chickens. I was at the local post office, chickens waited in line with me. We were at the Dole Plantation enjoying our Dole Whip, chickens. Walking through downtown Honolulu…chickens hanging out with pigeons.

Until next time, your friend B
