Greetings, hello, Hi…. yes, it’s true, but we’ll get to that!
We used the rainy day on Friday to get everything packed up for our journey to the garden isle of Kauai, Hawaii’s oldest island. We took one last drive with the top down after breakfast on Saturday to say goodbye. First stop was Lauhala Land in Mackenzie State Recreation Area. Babette had given us recommendations of how to follow the 2018 lava flow. The cliff views and crashing waves did not disappoint. As we drove further the lava flow came into view. Malamaki Forest Reserve had piles of lava rock everywhere. Isaac Hale State Park was no longer green and lush, it was a black sand beach with fields of lava flow and rock. The road ended, literally, covered by lava flow. They plowed the rock into piles and made a path for hikers. I can’t imagine what it was like being evacuated from your home and then coming back three years later to black rock everywhere.
We ended up back at Lauhala so I could wade in the water and we could video the massive waves crashing into the shore. It was so beautiful. Funny story, I took this amazing picture of Trevor standing on a cliff with waves crashing behind him, then while I was standing in pool of water, he took a picture of me, trying to get the waves in too. He started to take a video with the waves crashing behind me, and…they soaked me! We have video proof of the scream, then the laughter. I was not expecting them to hit that high at all. They crashed taller than the cliff! I was soaked, head to toe.
We flew into Kauai that evening, got settled into our next spot and then headed out for dinner and groceries. By the way the chickens are back. The Big Island did not have the free roaming chickens like Oahu. They have mongoose. Kauai has the chickens AND feral cats. After dinner, we walked to the Target to grab some groceries for the week. In our checkout lane, there was only one other couple ahead of us. I was looking at the map on my phone and Trevor pulled me in and whispered, “Hey look, that guy looks like Chuck Norris.” Now mind you, I have a picture of Walker Texas Ranger in my head. Walker lives in Texas. The guy standing in front of me drinking a Starbucks coffee while his wife checks out is older, in a ballcap and shorts and I’m not so sure. So, I decide to get behind Trevor and sneak a picture so we can investigate later. I hold the phone up and before I can snap the picture, Chuck Norris catches me and throws me the biggest grin, ear to ear. I was embarrassed, didn’t take the picture and he nodded at us and they went on their way.
While waiting for our Uber, I started Googling current pictures of Chuck Norris and his wife. I followed him on Instagram, and found out that he turned 82 this year and they own property on Kauai! It really was him. When our driver picked us up, Trevor told her the story. She started laughing and said, “Yep, that was him. We see him a lot. Did he smile at you?”
Do you know how many Walker Texas Ranger episodes I have watched with Trevor and/or his dad? We were totally starstruck and still giggling about it when we got back to our room. I’m including a picture of him below on his 82nd bday in a Kauai tshirt. So cool.
Beach day tomorrow. We are going to try snorkeling…I say this with cautious optimism LOL.
Your friend, B
